Christmas Fun!

I hope that your families had an excellent weekend enjoying the snowy weather!

We will be enjoying Christmas caroling in the gym every day this week, and students are welcome to wear any santa hats or Christmas accessories they have for the rest of the week.

Students will be visiting the WPS Christmas Market this week to pick out a gift for their parents. If you have miscellaneous items around your house that you would like to donate for children to choose from, or extra wrapping paper/bows, please send them to school tomorrow.

We will be sending students home with their building projects tomorrow. They will need to carry them with two hands, but should be able to manage transporting them home independently, whether it is on the bus or walking home.

On Thursday morning we will be having a visit from Santa Claus. On Thursday afternoon, students will do a Christmas craft with their Willow Park School Family Groups.

On Friday morning Division 1 will do Christmas station rotations. On Friday afternoon, we will have a Christmas celebration with a Christmas movie, some games, and a Christmas snack.

If you would like to send along a special Christmas snack for Friday afternoon, please email me for class numbers and allergy information.

Christmas Vacation is from Monday, Dec. 21- Friday, Jan. 1st. School resumes Monday, January 4th.

What We Were Up To This Week: Christmas Concert Fun!

It has been a very festive week in Grade 1H! I have attached a clip of the student's performance from yesterday afternoon, they did a WONDERFUL job. The students all looked so sweet in their PJs and slippers, and it was great to see how proud they felt after their performance.

I have included a link to the video of their performance here, as well as the 'Links and Resources' page: https://youtu.be/gKBDPYv0lec

This week we were busy learning all about words that have the "short o" sound at the beginning, middle, or end of the word. We went on a number hunt around the school to see how many numbers over 10 we could find. There were LOTS, which shows us it is very important to know about numbers more than 10.

This week we also continued our building project by adding a path from the homes to the school. First, we watched some videos of students in Columbia who must travel across a canyon on dangerous ziplines to get to school, and another village in Columbia where students must cross a river with a very fast current in order to get to school.
Los Pinos zipline to school: https://youtu.be/Wh0o2zNOx8Y
Ortega River Crossing: https://youtu.be/g0LZeInblQI
We agreed that we are very fortunate to have safe paths to school, whether it is by bus, vehicle, or walking on the sidewalk! Students were amazed to see how hard these children work to get to school. I have included the links to these videos. If you would like, please watch and discuss with your children.

Starting next week, the sledding hill will be open. If you'd like your child to participate in sledding at recess, please send their permission forms and their sleds.

That is all for now, have a great weekend!

Christmas Concert Information
We have all busing permission forms handed in. This means that all students are able to be transported to Daystar Church and back to Willow Park School on Wednesday for our dress rehearsal, and on Thursday for the afternoon concert. Thank you for returning these promptly!

The address to Daystar Church is:
360 Gaetz Road, Leduc, Alberta- The corner of Rollyview Road & Gaetz Road (RR250)

Wednesday:
We will leave for Daystar Church as soon as we do attendance, so at about 8:40. It will be important to be on time! Please send a mess free snack (no crumbs, no utensils, no chance of smearing on nice new carpets!!!) for your child to eat while we are there. We will be back at the school for the afternoon.

Thursday afternoon:
Please send your child to school in their PJ Costumes on Thursday (slippers in backpack). We will have a modified schedule on Thursday, and will eat lunch before heading to Daystar Church. If you plan on attending the afternoon concert at 12:45, please note that you may not bring your child home from the church, they must return to the school with the rest of the students at the end of the concert. Students will be wearing their outdoor shoes to the church, and bringing along their indoor shoes. Slippers will be sent home with the students to bring back for the concert.

Thursday evening:
Concert begins at 7:00 pm. Students should arrive at 6:30 and report to their assigned waiting area. Parents should take their child’s outdoor footwear with them into the church. Students may bring books, small toys, games or electronics  to use while waiting. These should be labelled and in backpacks. They should also bring a water bottle. Parents MUST bring tickets for the evening performance. Grades K-3 students will be dismissed from the stage at the conclusion of the concert. This means that you must return to the waiting area at the end of the night to pick up your child's belongings.

As always, please let me know if you have any further questions or require additional information!

What We've Been Up to This Week: Nov. 30-Dec. 4

It was a busy week in Grade 1, full of December fun!

Students have been busy practicing their Christmas song, and are excited to perform it during the Christmas Concerts next week! We have a very enthusiastic bunch of singers in 1H. They even won Music Class of the Month for Division 1. We celebrated by singing some of our favourite songs, including 'Let it Go' from Frozen.

We have been busy building our model of Willow Park School, and creating a Winter Wonderland. Students love to build together using blocks and some of the materials that parents have donated. This week we read 'Three Little Pigs' and students re-told the story using bricks, sticks, and hay. We learned all about the 'short i' vowel sound at the beginning, middle, and end of words. In the midst of Christmas Concert practices, performances, and festive fun in the week to come, we will also be focusing on the 'short o' vowel sound.

Please stay tuned for more important information regarding the Christmas Concert in the days to come!

Playing board games with our Grade 6 Buddies

Building our people, animals, and houses this week

Building Unit
This week, we continued our building unit. We discussed the difference between domestic animals, like pets or farm animals, and wild animals. Students chose a domestic animal to build out of salt dough, and then built themselves out of salt dough as well. We discussed how it is important to use the right material when something is being built. Students had the choice to build out of cardboard, flat paper, wood scraps, or dough. They decided the best material to build a person and an animal with was dough, because you can roll it and make it round. First we made a 'blue-print' plan, then we built, then we painted. Once they were done, they began on their houses. Since it was such a snowy week, discussed how we needed to put something on the roof to protect from rain and snow, so students glued plastic straws to the roof as 'shingles', and added 'siding' to their homes to protect from the elements. Next week, we will build Willow Park School and work on creating a pathway from their homes to the school. The students are very engaged in this project, it is exciting to watch them plan, experiment with which materials work best, and take pride in what they are building!

Thank you to everyone who donated items to build with! We have many items for many different projects.

Language Arts
We continue to spend some time focusing on vowel sounds. Students are motivated to learn the vowel sounds- they understand that it is important to know these sounds because there is at least one vowel in every word. We focused on the 'short e' sound this week.

BOOK ORDERS
Book orders were due Thursday, Nov. 26th. I placed the order after school, so no late orders will be accepted.

RAZ KIDS
I sent home access information for RAZ Kids yesterday. https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login, username willowpark1. RAZ Kids is an excellent program for students to be able to read books at a level they understand, and then answer comprehension questions upon completing the story. I have included the link on the 'links and resources' page for future access.

Tobogganing and Winter Wear
Please take some time to review the information package sent home on Wednesday, which explains the rules for the tobogganing hills. Please return the permission form sent home as soon as possible, if it is not returned, your child will not be allowed on the hill.

As the weather get colder, it is very important for your child to practice putting winter wear independently. In order to encourage the development of important fine motor and organizational skills, we do not help them unless they are very stuck! The faster they are able to get dressed, the more time they will have outside. We have had some instances of students leaving with other student's mittens. We have many students with the same gloves or mittens as a classmate, so please make sure these items are correctly labelled so that they make it home! Lost and found is located in the hallway by the gym. If an item goes missing, that is where you will likely find it!

What We've Been Up To: Nov. 2-6th

Our class poppy wreath
We have been discovering the importance of peace in our lives, and what peacefulness feels like. We have discussed the difference between a peace-maker and a peace-breaker. We explored how we can experience peace with all 5 senses and recorded this in our peace journals. Students experienced what peace feels like in the cozy corner, with blankets, pillows, and warm scarves to cuddle up with. We listened to peaceful music accompanied by pictures of peaceful scenes, and smelled the Peace and Calming essential oil in a diffuser. Lots of the students mentioned they feel most peaceful when they smell something delicious baking, in their cozy beds, or if they are in a warm bubble bath with calming scents. Students painted pictures of their favourite meals, and on Friday we baked cinnamon buns and ate them because yummy baking can comfort us on chilly days!

We have also been learning all about bats! Students began to show interest in bats during the weeks leading up to Halloween, so we decided to take some time to learn more about these interesting creatures!

We will  begin our building unit on Monday, November 16th, so please send in any of the building materials previously requested when students return from the mid-term break.

We are almost complete our Alphabet Army: Letter of the Day unit and will be moving on to a new Language Arts unit when the students arrive back from mid-term break as well.

There will be no school on Wednesday, Nov. 11th, Thursday, Nov. 12th, and Friday, Nov. 13th.

A special congratulations to Logan Forsythe, who received the award for Musician of the Month. Great work, Logan! We are so proud of you.

Halloween Fun!

What a fun week celebrating Halloween! We continued to learn about pumpkins. Students showed what they know about pumpkin parts by playing a fun game called 'pin the part on the pumpkin'. We carved Jack-O-Lanterns and examined the parts of the pumpkin up close.

The grade 6 students did an excellent job putting together a Carnival and Haunted House for the students to enjoy.

The students were so excited to dress up and participate in the Halloween Parade on Friday after lunch. Thank you to the parents who came to help the students change into their costumes, as well as the parents who sent special treats to enjoy during snack time. I hope you had a safe and happy Halloween!
