Fictional and Non-Fictional Bears

This week we spent a lot of time talking about fiction and non-fiction. We discussed fictional bears and what fiction bears are, have, and do. Then we discussed what we've learned about 'real' bears (non-fictional in stories) and what real bears are, have, and do.

Today the students made 'real' bear dens and a fictional 'pretend' bear home. Many of the students chose to make the cottage from Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Report Cards were sent home along with swimming Report Cards and a folder of some of the learning activities that have been completed this term. Please take some time to go through it with your child!

Once again, have a great spring break :)

Today we have our last swimming lesson. The students have done a wonderful job travelling back and forth from the LRC and listening to the swimming instructors. I am proud of their hard work!

April Milk orders are due tomorrow, as well as library. There are quite a few overdue books outstanding. Please return by tomorrow!

Report Cards will be sent home tomorrow along with some of their best work this term! Please take some time to go through their work with your child.

In Phys. Ed we have been working on our dance unit. We have learned a few dances, but the 'Sid Shuffle' seems to be a favourite. Here is a link to the dance if you'd like to have your child show you their moves :)

St. Patrick's Day and End of Hibernation Celebration

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Yesterday we built leprechaun traps and we just about caught one! We arrived to green footprints, a little bit of a mess, and lots of treasure. Our leprechaun visitor left this note:

Our Grade 6 Buddies brought some 'probots' they have been working with and showed us how to key in codes to create shapes on paper. The students programmed squares, triangles, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons, octagons and rhombus shapes. Then they counted corners and edges of each shape.

Tomorrow we have 'The End of Hibernation Celebration'. Students may bring a stuffed animal that hibernates, such as a: bear, snake, bat, hedgehog, bumblebee, lemur, marmot, or turtle. I have included a song about hibernation and migration as well as a link we used to research about animals that hibernate below.

What We've Been Up to This Week! Feb. 29-March 4

I am updating the blog early this week due to the short week- No School this Friday!

We are having a blast learning all about bears! This week we focused on non-fiction stories to find information about bears. We agreed that 'we can learn a lot from pictures.' We also learned about sequencing the beginning, middle, and end of the story with the fiction story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students had a blast acting it out in small groups and presenting it to one another!

Here are some photos of our bear collages and the fun we had 'splatter painting' to create the look of grizzly bear fur. This project focused on the bear's habitat. Ask your child about this!

Here is a link to a bear song the students are loving: https://youtu.be/K1S748kZRb0

Planning for the New School Year (2016-2017) Forms were due today (March 2nd, 2016). I've only received two. Please send in ASAP!

Pizza by the slice lunch is tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the last day of the week- there is no school on Friday, March 4th.

Have a wonderful weekend!

A guided drawing lesson focusing on drawing with shapes and adding details. Your child should be able to tell you all about what bears eat- they have included what they know about what bears need to survive in their pictures!Ask them about it!
